Kot prvo 'white noise' se ne prevede v 'beli hrup' temveč kot 'beli šum'.
Beli šum je oblika (točnejše definicija) motnje merjenega signala.
Beli šum je v znanosti poznan kot simetrična v spektralnem spektru dokaj enakomerno po času porazporejena motnja.
Še drugče: beli šum je meja območja razpoznavnosti/uporabnosti merjenega signala na skrajnem območju zaznavnosti merilne naprave. Naprava sicer lahko še meri, vendar pa so meritve neuporabne.
Termin 'beli šum' ni nujno povezn izključno z zvokom, temveč velja za valovanje na splošno!
