According to a poll of Anglican clergy which found that as many as 16 per cent are unclear about God and two per cent think it is no more than a human construct.

The Rev David Paterson, a retired Church of England priest, said: "I preach using God’s terminology, but never with the suggestion that God actually exists.”

Alison Ruoff, a lay member of the General Synod, said: “Clergy just preach social clap-trap these days. We expect better from them.”

Only 2%? Honestly? Are you SURE?
In 1970 I was a Word-in-Action TV producer when one our our reporters, Michael Wall, set out to do a piece about Priests who no longer believed. It had happened to him - Michael had been a Priest but, at about 40, had lost his faith, left the Church and became a Guardian and then a W. in A. reporter. So the first thing he did was to go off to see the other students who had been in his theology group at Oxford: there were 23 of them - I remember the number clearly. Was he alone? Was it only him? How were the others, at 40-ish, doing? Michael was very personable and easy to talk to - he would have been great behind the curtain in the Confessional. And of the 23 others,
NOT ONE SINGLE ONE believed any of it any more - but there they were stuck in their 'jobs', stuck with their position in society, stuck with their families, with NOT ONE of them believing a word of it. I can remember Michael just feeling immensely sorry for them. And that was almost 45 years ago. So 2% 45 years later is looking good – “oddly” good I’d say.

So many lives are spoiled by religion. How do you think a priest feels when he realises that he has been unintentionally lying to his congregation? Your comment seems to suggest that he should carry on lying as if obstinacy was a virtue.

one thing does seem clear however, 2% of Anglican priests appear to believe that God does not exist outside human imagination, and yet they are still preaching the word of God. At best it's wild hypocrisy, at worst it's fraud.

The Christian church is lost and in a terrible crisis. There is no way it can revive in the face of a world where individualism rules and reading from the same hymn sheet has been replaced by social media. This article only adds to the demise of the church that is now associated with paedophilia, sexual abuse and stupendous hypocrisy.

A third of Church of England clergy doubt or disbelieve in the physical Resurrection and only half are convinced of the truth of the Virgin birth, according to a new survey.
The poll of nearly 2,000 of the Church's 10,000 clergy also found that only half believe that faith in Christ is the only route to salvation.
While it has long been known that numerous clerics are dubious about the historic creeds of the Church, the survey is the first to disclose how widespread is the scepticism.
